James Carroll interviewed on The PEMF Podcast about Photobiomodulation
The interview starts at 1:30 minute mark.
The PEMF Podcast sat down with James Carroll, a Photobiomodulation (PBM) pioneer with nearly 40 years in the field, to separate real science from marketing hype. From irradiance and wavelength selection to dose-response curves and proper measurement standards, James explains why many popular consumer devices fail to deliver therapeutic levels of light despite impressive claims.
Questions James was asked: Are red light masks, blankets and handheld wands actually doing anything? Or are most people underdosing without realising it?
The PEMF Podcast dive into what photobiomodulation really means (and why it’s not just “red light therapy”), the three core biological mechanisms behind its effects, and why anti-inflammatory outcomes are the most consistently supported in the research. James also shares inside insights from testing popular devices, discusses why masks and blankets often miss the mark, and explains how proper dosing is more like cooking than simply multiplying power by time. A must-listen for anyone serious about red and near-infrared light therapy especially before buying your next device.

Whole body Photobiomodulation for fibromyalgia and other pain syndromes, James Carroll at Float Conference
Seven and a half million Americans suffer from an “incurable” pain called Fibromyalgia (FM). FM is a widespread hypersensitive chronic muscle pain; patients also experience chronic fatigue and sleeping problems.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the medical application of light and has been clinically proven to reduce inflammation and pain wherever the beam is applied.
The following study, presented at the British Pain Society in June 2022, showed that whole body Photobiomodulation substantially relieved pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia. Forty-two fibromyalgia patients participated in the triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial and were randomized to receive a NovoTHOR treatment (or a placebo NovoTHOR treatment) for 20 minutes, three times a week, for four weeks.
At the end of the study, there was a statistically significant reduction in pain and a statistically significant improvement in Quality of Life in the active NovoTHOR group. Psychological factors (kinesiophobia, self-efficacy) also improved. The authors concluded that NovoTHOR whole-body PBM is a safe, effective, drug-free treatment for fibromyalgia.

James Carroll interviewed by Linda Bailey
James Carroll, Founder and CEO of THOR Photomedicine interviewed by Linda Bailey, owner of Total You Health.
James discusses facts and myths about the therapy. From why red light is the best for healing of all the colors in the light spectrum, to when he thinks PBM will become more mainstream, he sheds light on where this therapy is today compared to other alternative therapies. ALD PBM Symposium – October 14, 2020 Session
James Carroll, FRSM, CEO | THOR Photomedicine Ltd, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
Photobiomodulation for Orofacial Pain
Photobiomodulation (PBM) has many applications in dentistry with clinical trial evidence published for a wide range of painful pathologies, including postoperative pain, aphthous ulcers, orthodontic pain, burning mouth syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, stomatitis, oral mucositis, dentin hypersensitivity, temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and neck pain. PBM can also be used to desensitize teeth and even induce anesthesia.
How does PBM do this, what is the evidence, and how does one treat a patient? What treatment parameters (wavelength, power, beam area, irradiance, pulses, treatment time, energy and fluence) are required for a successful treatment? How much PBM is enough, how much is too much, how many treatments are needed, what intervals are required between treatment? What are the contraindications and treatment reactions, and are there any adverse effects? This presentation will address these issues.
Educational Objectives
- Relate the potential range of PBM applications.
- Describe how PBM works.
- Understand dose as it relates to PBM treatment.
- Comprehend how to treat various dental conditions with PBM.
